“Play Dead” is a haunting and dramatic track by Björk, co-written and produced with David Arnold (known for his film scores, including several James Bond films) and English bass guitarist and singer Jah Wobble. The song was written specifically for the gritty British crime drama The Young Americans. Arnold, who was scoring the film, wanted a strong closing track and approached Björk, who was just launching her solo career after The Sugarcubes. She had not seen The Young Americans when she wrote the lyrics, basing them on a summary of the main character’s emotional state, which she asked the filmmakers to describe.
