Hekla Magnúsdóttir (who performs and records under the name Hekla) is an accomplished Icelandic theremin musician and vocalist. “The Whole” opens her third album, Xiuxiuejar (a Catalan word meaning to whisper), a haunting, otherworldly sonic cycle of quiet and disquiet, gentleness and menace. This piece utilizes details from photographs I took during my first trip to Iceland in October of 2022.
