Jóhann Gunnar Jóhannsson (1969–2018) was an Icelandic composer of music for theatre, dance, television and film (including original scores for Sicario and The Theory of Everything). Drone Mass was commissioned by the American Contemporary Music Ensemble and premiered at the Temple of Dendur at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2015. Inspired by the Coptic Gospel of the Egyptians, it stands as one of his most profound and spiritual works, exploring themes of faith, death and transcendence. “Two Is Apocryphal,” the second of its nine movements, utilizes layered, fragmented and otherwise obscured language to create an evocative, ritualistic texture.
