Hljómar was one of Iceland’s most influential rock bands, often considered the country’s first. Formed in 1963 in Keflavík, they were heavily inspired by British bands like The Beatles and The Who. As the band evolved, they embraced a heavier garage rock and psychedelic sound. In 1966, they began using the name Thor’s Hammer for their English-language releases, aiming for international recognition. By the late 1960s, the band’s activity slowed, and they eventually disbanded. Today, Thor’s Hammer is highly regarded among music collectors for releases like the 1966 EP Umbarumbamba, considered one of the rarest released records in the world.
